Coaches Corner…. Integrating a Coaching Approach to Leadership
How do you coach the supervisor who thinks he can “do it all himself”, is often unwilling to trust other management or staff and operates by “crisis management”? The majority of his staff is becoming frustrated yet cannot express this to him.
A first step is to get the supervisor interested in the notion of leadership. He may not see himself as a leader, with the big picture in mind, but as a manger focusing on the outcomes in front of him. To create some initial life-changing awareness, ask some questions such as:
- At what point are you going to lead this department instead of being in the middle of it?
- Are you interested in getting better outcomes with less wear and tear on you and your staff?
- What are you doing to get people prepared for: succession, expansion, change…..?
When you get their attention, offer resources to develop their leadership competencies: such as communication, vision, problem solving, and teamwork. Most professional organizations have a list of relevant competencies.
